Tue Nov 19 08:08:19 UTC 2024: ## Senior AAP Leader Kailash Gahlot Defects to BJP, Citing Ideological Differences and “Embarrassing Controversies”
**New Delhi, November 19** – In a major blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), former Delhi minister Kailash Gahlot joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday. Gahlot, a prominent AAP leader and MLA from Najafgarh, resigned from the party on Sunday, citing disillusionment with the party’s direction and recent controversies.
His resignation letter, addressed to AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, highlighted the party’s failure to deliver on key promises, particularly the cleaning of the Yamuna River. He also criticized controversies surrounding Kejriwal’s new official residence, referring to it as “embarrassing and bizarre.”
Joining the BJP in the presence of senior party leaders including Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Gahlot rejected claims that he was pressured to leave the AAP. He stated that the party had deviated from its core values, transforming from a party of the common people (“aam”) to an elite one (“khaas”).
Gahlot further criticized the Delhi government’s confrontational approach towards the central government, arguing that it hindered the city’s progress. He expressed his belief that true development for Delhi requires collaboration with the Centre and cited Prime Minister Modi’s vision as an inspiration for his move.
Gahlot’s defection is a significant setback for the AAP, especially with Delhi Assembly elections expected in February. His departure, along with his criticism of the party’s leadership, is likely to fuel speculation about further defections and impact the AAP’s electoral prospects.
