Mon Nov 18 18:15:02 UTC 2024: ## Tiruppur Farmers Protest Illegal Garbage Dumping Near Historic Temple
**Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu – November 19, 2024** – The Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Protection Association is demanding an immediate halt to the illegal dumping of tonnes of garbage near abandoned quarries in Pongupalayam panchayat, Tiruppur. The association alleges that Tiruppur Corporation is responsible for the dumping, which they claim is endangering the environment, the livelihoods of local farmers, and a significant cultural site.
In a petition filed with the Directorate of Municipal Administration and several other authorities, including the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and the District Collector, the association’s State Secretary (Legal Awareness Wing), R. Sathish Kumar, cited violations of environmental laws and judicial directives. He highlighted the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) penalties against the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for similar offenses, emphasizing the potential for severe health risks and groundwater contamination.
The dumping is occurring on several survey numbers (199, 206, and 209) in Kalampalayam village. Mr. Kumar argued that the Corporation’s actions constitute an abuse of power, violating citizens’ constitutional rights and potentially attracting penalties under BNS 198.
The issue is further complicated by the proximity of the 8th-century Thirumuruganatha Swamy Temple and the reliance of the Pongupalayam community on groundwater for drinking and irrigation. The petition warns of severe soil degradation and potential health problems due to the pollutants leaching into the water supply. The association is urging immediate intervention to prevent further environmental damage and protect the health and well-being of the local population.
