**Rio de Janeiro, Brazil** – The G20 summit concluded in Rio de Janeiro with a mixed bag of outcomes. While leaders addressed pressing global issues including the war in Ukraine, the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, and the climate crisis, significant divisions hampered progress on several key fronts.
Despite high hopes for a breakthrough on climate change, the final declaration lacked concrete commitments. While acknowledging the need to dramatically increase climate financing, from billions to trillions, the statement failed to specify funding sources or reiterate the commitment to a just transition away from fossil fuels, a pledge made at COP28. Critics, such as Mick Sheldrick of Global Citizen, decried the lack of decisive action.
The ongoing war in Ukraine dominated discussions, particularly following the US authorization of Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory. While calling for a “comprehensive, just, and durable peace,” the G20 statement notably avoided explicitly condemning Russian aggression. Chinese President Xi Jinping urged peace talks, echoing Brazil’s efforts.
On the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, G20 leaders called for comprehensive ceasefires, aligning the Gaza ceasefire call with a US-backed UN resolution demanding the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for a permanent truce. A ceasefire in Lebanon was also urged, aiming to allow for the safe return of displaced citizens.
A notable success was the endorsement of a plan to improve taxation of ultra-high-net-worth individuals, a key priority for Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. While respecting national tax sovereignty, the G20 committed to exploring mechanisms to prevent tax avoidance. Economist Gabriel Zucman lauded the decision as historic.
Finally, President Lula’s initiative to establish a global alliance against hunger gained significant traction, with 82 countries signing on. The alliance aims to coordinate international efforts to fight hunger and replicate successful anti-hunger programs globally, targeting half a billion people by 2030.
