NEW DELHI – Former Delhi cabinet minister Kailash Gahlot has defected from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), citing disillusionment with the AAP’s governance and alleged compromising of its original values. The move, just months before crucial Delhi assembly elections, is expected to significantly impact the political landscape.
Gahlot, a prominent Jat leader and former transport minister, joined the BJP at its national headquarters on Monday. He publicly denied allegations of pressure from central investigative agencies, such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), claiming his decision was based on his belief that the AAP has strayed from its core principles and prioritized political infighting with the central government over the needs of the people.
In his resignation letter and subsequent statements, Gahlot criticized the AAP for engaging in “constant fights with the central government,” hindering Delhi’s development. He also asserted that the party had become detached from the “aam aadmi” (common man), and was embroiled in “embarrassing controversies.”
BJP leaders welcomed Gahlot’s defection, highlighting his experience and influence. Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar described the move as a “turning point” in Delhi’s politics. Baijayant Panda, BJP’s Delhi election in-charge, characterized the switch as evidence of dwindling confidence in the AAP.
The AAP, while acknowledging Gahlot’s departure, denied any pressure tactics and wished him well. However, prior to Gahlot’s announcement, the AAP had accused the BJP of using central agencies to force his hand.
Gahlot’s decision follows previous tensions between him and the AAP, notably a dispute over flag-hoisting duties at a state function. His departure marks the second cabinet member to leave the AAP recently, potentially weakening the party’s position in the upcoming elections.
