**Stockholm/Doha** – A new Al Jazeera documentary examining European child protection laws has ignited a fierce debate in Sweden, with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson labeling it “dangerous” and warning of potential security risks. The three-part series, “Behind Closed Doors,” profiles families across Norway, Sweden, Germany, and Luxembourg who have had children removed by social services.
The documentary’s producers at Al Jazeera 360 reject accusations that the film is biased or promotes misinformation, similar to the 2022 “LVU campaign” which falsely claimed Swedish authorities were targeting Muslim families. Awad Joumaa, head of originals at Al Jazeera 360, insists the film presents diverse perspectives, including court documents and official statements alongside the families’ accounts. He points out that while German authorities cooperated, Sweden declined interview requests.
Swedish criticism focuses on potential damage to the country’s international image and increased security threats, particularly in light of past controversies surrounding Quran burnings. Sofia Bard of the Swedish Institute warned of negative international repercussions, citing the potential for further anti-Sweden protests. The Swedish Security Service previously raised the threat level against the country following similar incidents.
