**Rio de Janeiro, Brazil –** Rio de Janeiro is under a heavy security blanket as it prepares to host the G20 Leaders Summit on November 18th and 19th. Following a failed bomb attack on Brazil’s Supreme Court in Brasilia earlier this week, authorities are taking no chances.
A massive security force of 26,000, including 2,900 military personnel, has been deployed. Troops, armored vehicles, and naval ships are patrolling the area surrounding the Museum of Modern Art, the summit’s venue. Air traffic restrictions, including a drone ban, are in effect at the nearby Santos Dumont Airport for two days.
Marines have conducted beach landings, and naval boats are patrolling Botafogo Bay. Federal police have conducted bomb sweeps and positioned snipers around the museum. The government has invoked a special measure allowing the military to detain and arrest suspects.
“We are operating at the highest level of security possible,” stated Federal Police Director Andrei Rodrigues. The heightened security measures are in response to Wednesday’s incident, in which a right-wing activist detonated explosives outside the Supreme Court after a failed attempt to enter with a homemade bomb. The summit is expected to draw 84 leaders and ministers.
