Sat Nov 16 21:40:57 IST 2024: ## Kuruva Thief Rumours Spark Increased Security in Ernakulam
**KOCHI, KERALA –** A special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to investigate a series of attempted break-ins in Ernakulam district, fueled by speculation that the notorious “Kuruva thieves” are responsible. While two cases have been registered by North Paravur and Vadakkekara police, authorities have yet to find evidence linking the incidents to the infamous gang.
The incidents, which occurred between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. on Wednesday, November 13th, involved attempts to enter several homes in Chendamangalam and Karimbadam. In one instance, residents were alerted by a loud noise, and in another, a crying baby woke the family, allowing them to spot the suspects. An iron rod was found abandoned near one of the targeted houses. While the suspects, described as wearing dhotis and with their faces covered, were caught on grainy CCTV footage, no valuables were stolen.
The grainy CCTV footage and rumours of Kuruva thief activity in Alappuzha sparked public panic and led to speculation on social media. Ernakulam Rural police, under District Police Chief Vaibhav Saxena, have increased night patrols and deployed additional personnel to railway stations and bus stands. Kochi City police have also heightened security measures in response to the viral footage.
While the SIT, led by the Munambam Deputy Superintendent of Police, investigates, authorities emphasize that no concrete evidence currently links the attempted break-ins to the Kuruva thieves. The investigation is ongoing.
