**Chennai, November 17, 2024** – The Supreme Court’s dismissal of Vedanta’s review petition to reopen the Sterlite copper plant in Thoothukudi has been hailed as a victory by MDMK general secretary Vaiko. Mr. Vaiko, a long-time opponent of the plant, declared the decision the “last nail in the coffin” for Sterlite.
The court’s rejection, according to Mr. Vaiko, represents a triumph for the people’s movement and the legal battle waged against the plant’s operation. He cited the plant’s detrimental impact on the environment, agricultural lands, and the health of Thoothukudi residents since its 1994 launch. Mr. Vaiko highlighted the court’s acknowledgment that while industrial closure is not ideal, Vedanta’s repeated and serious violations left authorities with no alternative.
