WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – No. 13 Purdue overcame a late deficit to defeat No. 2 Alabama 87-78 Friday night in Mackey Arena, extending their home winning streak to 21 games. Trey Kaufman-Renn led the Boilermakers with a career-high 26 points and 8 rebounds. Freshman C.J. Cox proved crucial, scoring nine of his 11 points during a decisive 13-0 run in the second half that swung the momentum. Braden Smith added 17 points and 10 assists, moving into third place on Purdue’s all-time assists list. Fletcher Loyer also contributed 17 points.

Alabama, led by freshman Labaron Philon’s 18 points, held a 65-59 lead before Purdue’s surge. The Crimson Tide’s Grant Nelson recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Mark Sears scored 15. Despite the loss, Alabama coach Nate Oats viewed the early-season road test against a traditionally strong home team as a valuable learning experience.

Purdue coach Matt Painter praised his team’s performance as their best yet, following three less-than-stellar outings. The Boilermakers’ victory marks their 25th consecutive win in November and their continued dominance in non-conference regular season games, dating back to December 2020. This win also saw Purdue defeat the highest-ranked non-conference opponent in Mackey Arena history.

Both teams face tough upcoming challenges. Alabama plays Illinois on Wednesday, while Purdue travels to face No. 15 Marquette on Tuesday.
