Sat Nov 16 18:55:41 UTC 2024: ## Kerala Launches Safety Drive for Sabarimala Pilgrimage

**THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, November 17, 2024** – To ensure a safe pilgrimage season, the Kerala Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) is implementing a comprehensive safety plan to reduce accidents on the treacherous roads leading to the Sabarimala Ayyappan Temple. The annual Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrimage commenced on Saturday.

Last year, 174 accidents occurred on the routes to the temple, resulting in two fatalities. This year, the MVD aims to cut accidents by 50% and eliminate fatalities entirely. A key component of the initiative is a series of awareness videos released in six languages (Malayalam, English, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Telugu) highlighting accident-prone areas (“black spots”) and offering safety advice. These videos are available on YouTube and other social media platforms.

The MVD identified Erumely (17 accidents last year), Pullupara (16), Kanamala (13), and several other locations with high accident rates, primarily due to overspeeding and overtaking in hazardous areas. Officials noted that pilgrim drivers, often fatigued from travel and temple visits, are particularly vulnerable.

To provide immediate assistance, the MVD has established 24/7 Sabarimala safe zone control rooms in Ilavunkal, Erumely, and Kuttikkanam. Pilgrims can access emergency services, including breakdown assistance, crane recovery, and ambulance services, through dedicated helpline numbers and email (details below).
