**Madurai, Tamil Nadu, November 17, 2024** – A passenger aboard the Tirunelveli-Chennai Egmore Vande Bharat Express discovered an insect in their sambar breakfast on Saturday, prompting a swift response from Southern Railway officials. The incident occurred after the train departed Madurai around 8:00 AM.
According to a Southern Railway Madurai division statement, the food, supplied by Tirunelveli-based Brindavan Food Products, was immediately inspected by onboard railway officials. The insect was found on the casserole lid, appearing uncooked, suggesting contamination occurred after preparation.
Authorities apologized to the affected passenger and offered a replacement meal from Dindigul station, which was declined. The contaminated food was sent to a Dindigul health inspector for testing. Subsequent inspections of the train’s pantry and other food packages revealed no further issues.
A joint inspection of Brindavan Food Products’ kitchen in Tirunelveli was conducted by food safety and railway officials, resulting in the collection of food samples for analysis. The contractor has been fined ₹50,000 for negligence, with further action pending. A full investigation into the incident is underway.
