Sat Nov 16 12:59:34 UTC 2024: ## UK Universities Face Funding Crisis as Indian Student Applications Plummet

**London, November 16, 2024** – A sharp decline in Indian students applying to UK universities is threatening the financial stability of higher education institutions across England, according to a new report. The Office for Students (OfS) revealed a 20.4% drop in Indian student numbers between the 2022-23 and 2023-24 academic years, a decrease of over 28,000 students. This follows a similar trend with Nigerian students, who saw a 44.6% drop.

The report, based on UK Home Office data, highlights the significant impact this decline will have on university finances. The OfS projects a potential £3.445 billion net income reduction for the sector by 2025-26, leading to a possible £1.636 billion deficit and impacting up to 72% of providers.

Indian student groups attribute the decrease to several factors, including a government crackdown on dependents accompanying students, confusion surrounding post-study work visas, increased skilled worker salary thresholds, limited job prospects in the UK, and, for the first time, safety concerns following recent anti-immigration riots.

“Students are not allowed to bring their partners to the U.K. under the new policy and given the economic conditions here and recent rioting stories, unless the government addresses this issue the outlook for U.K. universities is bleak as they rely heavily on Indian students,” stated Amit Tiwari, President of the Indian National Students’ Association (INSA) UK.

Sanam Arora, chair of the National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK, echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for improved communication about opportunities in the UK and increased investment in employability support from universities to attract students.

The decline represents a significant challenge for UK universities, which in recent years have relied heavily on Indian students, who previously surpassed Chinese students as the largest group granted study visas. The future financial stability of many institutions now hangs in the balance.
