Sat Nov 16 19:49:09 UTC 2024: ## Ghaziabad Court Remains Shut as Lawyers Protest Police Lathi-Charge

**Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, November 17, 2024** – Over 350 lawyers from across Uttar Pradesh staged a mahapanchayat on Saturday, demanding the removal of a Ghaziabad district court judge following a police lathi-charge on October 29. The protest, which involves lawyers from districts including Gorakhpur, Mirzapur, and Gautam Buddh Nagar, has resulted in the closure of the Ghaziabad district and sessions court complex since the incident.

The October 29th clash occurred after the judge called in police to disperse protesting lawyers who were demonstrating against him over a disagreement concerning an anticipatory bail case. Lawyers claim they were injured during the lathi-charge, while police allege the lawyers set fire to a local police outpost.

The ongoing strike is causing significant hardship for litigants. Several individuals shared their frustrations, including a 43-year-old man whose 15-year-old daughter is pursuing a sexual harassment case. He described the difficulty of repeatedly attending court hearings, only to find the complex closed. Similar stories emerged from a 61-year-old daily wage worker whose sister-in-law’s murder case is stalled and a man whose niece’s kidnapping case has been ongoing since 2020. All expressed concern over the delays and the impact on their lives. The lawyers’ protest highlights concerns about their safety and security, demanding accountability for the police action and the judge’s role in the incident.
