**KOCHI, KERALA – November 17, 2024** – Private bus operators in Angamaly and Kalady have launched a comprehensive digitalization initiative to modernize their fleet of 200 buses. The upgrade includes LED destination boards, a mobile app for real-time scheduling and tracking (“Busser”), CCTV cameras, front and door cameras for enhanced safety, live GPS tracking, and stop announcements in Malayalam, English, and Hindi. A digital display board at the Kalady panchayat bus stand will also provide schedule information.
The project, completed after a year of preparation and funded by the Private Bus Operators’ Association (Angamaly and Kalady area), aims to improve passenger experience and safety. Cashless payment options are also being integrated. Sensors and cameras will alert drivers to pedestrians and passengers near the bus, mitigating blind-spot accidents. Furthermore, some operators are exploring AI-based driver drowsiness detection systems.
Davis P.O., secretary of the association, highlighted the project’s benefits, emphasizing the ease of tracking schedules via the “Busser” app and the enhanced safety features. Siju Manuel, managing director of a Bengaluru-based supplier of bus safety equipment, noted the increasing interest in driver-drowsiness detection systems, particularly for night routes. The initiative also includes GPS and CCTV monitoring to deter rash driving and track passenger numbers and fuel consumption, minimizing revenue loss. The entire operation can be monitored from an information center at the Kalady bus stand. The initiative covers routes connecting Angamaly, Kalady, Aluva, North Paravur, Kothamangalam, Muvattupuzha, Mala, and Chalakudy.
