Sun Nov 17 11:35:02 UTC 2024: ## Delhi Politics Heats Up Ahead of Assembly Elections: Cross-Party Defections Shake Up the City

**New Delhi:** With Delhi Assembly elections looming, the city’s political landscape is witnessing a flurry of high-profile defections as parties scramble for an edge. Sunday saw a dramatic exchange: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Minister Kailash Gahlot resigned, criticizing the party and the government, hinting at a potential move to the BJP. However, this was swiftly countered by AAP’s recruitment of Anil Jha, a former BJP MLA and two-time Kiradi constituency representative, further escalating tensions.

Jha, who joined AAP in the presence of party convenor Arvind Kejriwal, praised the party’s education and healthcare models. Gahlot, in his resignation letter, criticized Kejriwal’s government for failing to deliver on promises and neglecting pressing issues like the alarming pollution levels of the Yamuna River.

AAP responded to Gahlot’s resignation with accusations, with MP Sanjay Singh alleging that Gahlot was merely reading a BJP script and that the resignation was a consequence of prior ED raids. Singh further accused BJP of using investigative agencies to intimidate and recruit politicians.

The Congress party also seized the opportunity, criticizing both AAP and BJP for the ongoing defections, stating that the shifting allegiances undermine voter trust. Congress spokesperson Ragini Naik expressed confidence that the instability would pave the way for a Congress victory in the upcoming elections. The intense political maneuvering suggests a fierce battle ahead for the Delhi Assembly.
