**Thrissur, Kerala, November 17, 2024** – A climate march from Vazhachal to Athirappilly on Saturday, November 16th, drew attention to the escalating climate crisis in Kerala. Organized by People’s Climate Action Kerala and the Chalakkudy River Protection Forum, the march served as a memorial for Dr. Latha, a prominent environmental advocate, on the seventh anniversary of her death.
The event featured a diverse group of participants including students, activists, cultural leaders, scientists, and the public. The march began with a performance by renowned bamboo percussion artist Unnikrishnan Pakkanar and included vibrant artwork created by Thrissur Fine Arts College students. MLA Saneesh Kumar Joseph and Vazhachal gram panchayat president Geetha Vazhachal flagged off the march.
A memorial session honoring Dr. Latha included a lecture by climate scientist Dr. S. Abhilash, who detailed the scientific realities of climate change and its impact on Kerala’s environment. Speakers emphasized the urgent need for statewide campaigns to raise climate change awareness and highlighted the disproportionate impact on vulnerable communities like fishermen.
