**MUMBAI, INDIA** – Mumbai Police are investigating a bomb threat targeting the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) received Saturday morning. The caller, claiming to be the CEO of the banned terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, threatened to detonate a bomb at the central bank. The threat, made around 11 am to the RBI’s customer care helpline, included a song before the explicit threat was delivered.
The incident follows a recent surge in hoax bomb threats, including numerous incidents targeting airlines that resulted in grounded flights and significant disruption. Thursday saw an IndiGo flight make an emergency landing following a false bomb threat, the latest in a string of similar incidents over the past two months.
The government has expressed serious concern over these threats, warning social media platforms to actively combat the spread of misinformation related to such hoaxes or risk losing their legal exemptions in India. The IT Ministry highlighted the significant impact these false threats have on both public safety and the nation’s economic stability. Authorities are investigating, with one recent hoax already linked to a school dropout attempting to frame a friend. The Mumbai Police are currently working to identify and apprehend the individual responsible for the RBI threat.
