Sat Nov 16 16:37:19 UTC 2024: ## Chennai NGO Launches Initiative to Recycle Coconut Shells
**Chennai, November 16, 2024** – Concerned about the mounting waste from coconut trees accumulating in Chennai, the Namma Ooru Foundation has launched “Sustainable Sirattai,” an initiative to recycle coconut shells. The program aims to collect coconut shells from residents and deliver them to factories and small-scale units for processing.
The Foundation highlights the versatility of coconut shells, emphasizing their hardness and eco-friendly nature. These shells can be transformed into various products, including activated carbon for water purification and air filtration; charcoal for industrial fuel; and handcrafted items like bowls, cups, and cutlery. The shells can also be used in school projects.
Residents are encouraged to drop off their collected coconut shells at the Namma Ooru Centre for Sustainability located at 20, Veerabadhran Street, Pudupet, Komaleeswaranpet, Egmore. For more information, contact 95662 60703 or 98409 87363. The initiative promotes sustainability by providing eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic materials.
