**Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh:** The Andhra Pradesh state government is implementing large-scale initiatives to boost employment opportunities, particularly for women. The focus is on empowering artisans through skill development, technological integration, and enhanced market access.
The government is providing DWACRA loans to women, encouraging them to work from home. This includes training programs that combine traditional crafts with modern technology, and facilitating online marketing through platforms like the Me & My Store app.
One significant program utilizes water hyacinth, a common weed that plagues agricultural lands, to create over 60 environmentally friendly products. Women are being trained to produce puja items and other goods from this readily available resource, with marketing support provided by the Lepakshi organization. Similar initiatives are training women to create sustainable alternatives to plastic products, using natural materials.
Several women’s groups are already seeing significant success. One group is producing natural food items like spice powders, pickles, and traditional snacks, earning up to ₹2 lakh per month and exporting their products. Another group is creating eco-friendly bags and tissue paper crafts, generating income of ₹8,000-₹10,000 per month. These products will soon be available online, further expanding their reach.
The government is also supporting the Kalamkari textile industry in Pedana, which employs around 10,000 people. An MSME registration office has been set up to assist entrepreneurs in this sector. Workshops are being conducted to provide business management training.
