Sun Nov 17 15:42:59 UTC 2024: **Manipur’s NPP Withdraws Support From BJP Government Amidst Ongoing Violence**

Imphal, Manipur – The National People’s Party (NPP), led by Conrad Sangma, withdrew its support from the BJP-led Manipur government on Sunday, citing the government’s failure to control ethnic violence. In an official letter to BJP National President JP Nadda, the NPP stated that Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s administration had completely failed to quell the violence and restore normalcy. The decision to withdraw support is effective immediately.

This development follows a recent incident where six members of a single family went missing after an attack on a relief camp. The bodies of three of them, including a woman and two children, have since been found. This sparked widespread protests in Imphal Valley, with angry mobs attacking the homes of several MLAs and ministers, including an attempt on Chief Minister Biren Singh’s residence. At least 23 people have been arrested in connection with the violence.

While the NPP’s withdrawal of its seven MLAs reduces the BJP’s legislative strength, the BJP government remains in power with 32 MLAs, exceeding the majority mark of 31 in the 60-member Manipur Assembly. The BJP’s majority was strengthened earlier by the defection of five JDU MLAs.

Meanwhile, Manipur Congress President Kisham Meghchandra has offered the resignation of all Congress MLAs if the people of Manipur desire a fresh mandate to establish peace. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh responded positively, though urging the Chief Minister to resign first.

The situation remains tense, with internet and mobile data services suspended in Imphal Valley to curb the spread of misinformation and a curfew imposed. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has canceled his scheduled events and is closely monitoring the situation, holding meetings with senior officials to review the security situation and plan further action. CRPF Director General Anish Dayal has also arrived in Manipur. A major meeting on the Manipur issue is scheduled for Monday.
