CHENNAI, INDIA – Actress Nayanthara, known as the “Lady Superstar” of South Indian cinema, is embroiled in a controversy surrounding her Netflix documentary, “Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale.” Filmmaker and actor Dhanush has filed a ₹10 crore (approximately $1.2 million USD) copyright infringement lawsuit against Nayanthara and Netflix.

The lawsuit stems from a three-second clip from Dhanush’s 2015 film, “Naanum Rowdy Dhaan,” used in the documentary without permission, according to Dhanush. He claims the documentary makers did not obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) despite his ownership of the copyright to the footage.

Nayanthara responded with a three-page open letter, expressing her anger at Dhanush’s actions. She stated that she had sought an NOC for two years but was unsuccessful. While the documentary was subsequently re-edited, Nayanthara criticized Dhanush’s legal action as “the lowest level” of behavior, contrasting it with his public persona. She highlighted her own struggles in the industry without the advantages of family connections, unlike Dhanush.

Nayanthara has vowed to respond to the legal notice appropriately and asserted that while Dhanush’s action may be legally sound, its ethical implications will be judged accordingly. The matter is now before the courts.
