**Jhansi, UP (India) –** A fire at the Maharani Laxmibai Medical College’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) on Friday night has resulted in a tragic loss of life and widespread concern. Seven of the ten infants who suffered burns have been identified, with three from Lalitpur and two each from Jhansi and Hamirpur. However, three bodies remain unidentified, and six infants are still missing.

The fire, believed to have been caused by a short circuit in an oxygen concentrator around 10:45 PM, sparked panic in the ward where 55 babies were admitted. Sixteen infants are currently receiving treatment at the medical college, four of whom are in critical condition. One child has been discharged. An additional 22 infants, eight in critical condition, are hospitalized at other Jhansi hospitals.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Brajesh Pathak visited the site on Saturday morning and directed authorities to provide assistance to the affected families. The incident has prompted a thorough investigation into the hospital’s fire safety protocols.
