**Kozhikode, Kerala, November 16, 2024** – A 24-minute documentary, “Follow the Howl: Jackal – the Real Story,” by 27-year-old wildlife enthusiast Abhijith S. Suresh, is garnering attention for its insightful portrayal of golden jackals and its call for increased conservation efforts. The film, which recently won a state award from the Kerala Forest Department, features exclusive footage showcasing the animals’ behavior, habitat, and unique survival strategies.
Suresh, a postgraduate in journalism, spent two years filming the documentary near his home in Chenoli, Perambra. His work provides rare glimpses into the jackals’ lives, including their communication methods, territorial marking, and self-cleaning habits. The documentary also highlights the important role jackals play in controlling rodent populations, benefiting local farmers.
“It’s crucial to understand and protect these animals,” said Suresh. “They’re often misunderstood, but they are vital to the ecosystem.” His film emphasizes the need for further research into jackal interspecific hybridization and effective strategies for managing parasitic and contagious infections within jackal packs.
The documentary, available on Suresh’s YouTube channel, “Earth Echoes,” is a compelling argument for jackal conservation and urges authorities to prioritize the protection of these often overlooked canids.
