**NEW DELHI** – Infosys co-founder N.R. Narayana Murthy has cautioned against overconfidence in India’s burgeoning tech sector, urging a more inclusive approach to development that benefits rural populations. While acknowledging the impressive growth and Prime Minister Modi’s optimism regarding India’s expanding developer base, Murthy highlighted a significant disparity: the benefits haven’t reached India’s vast rural workforce.
Murthy advocated for studying China’s economic growth model, emphasizing the need to create low-tech manufacturing jobs to alleviate urban overcrowding and provide livelihoods for rural communities. He warned that neglecting this aspect will exacerbate existing urban challenges.
While praising India’s prowess in IT services, Murthy advised a more measured approach to Large Language Models (LLMs). He stressed the importance of focusing on applying existing LLM technology rather than prioritizing the development of indigenous models, citing India’s limited experience in building robust databases necessary for effective AI.
He also called for a reform in education, emphasizing the need to cultivate critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities among students. Murthy suggested bringing in educators from developed countries to train Indian teachers in these vital areas.
Despite his cautionary notes, Murthy remains optimistic about India’s technological advancements, citing initiatives like Aadhaar and the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) as examples of successful technological adaptation for national benefit.
