**Bengaluru, November 16, 2024** – Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has announced a new program allowing exceptional undergraduate engineering students to complete their degrees in seven semesters instead of the usual eight. This initiative, implemented under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, begins in the 2024-25 academic year.
VTU Vice Chancellor S. Vidyashankar stated that this program, following a similar model at IITs, will allow high-achieving students to enter the workforce sooner, pursue advanced studies, or participate in competitive examinations and research opportunities. While the official degree will be conferred after four years, students completing the program in seven semesters will receive a completion certificate from both the university and their respective colleges.
Eligibility requires maintaining a minimum CGPA of 9.0 or 9.5 throughout the course, registering for additional credits from the fifth semester onwards, and completing a minimum of 28 credits per semester. Students must complete all 160 required credits by the seventh semester to avoid attending the eighth. The seventh semester will allow for internships, technical seminars, and any remaining coursework. Students with backlogs or failed subjects are not eligible.
This initiative replaces a previously discontinued fast-track program that allowed completion in three-and-a-half years. VTU claims to be the first university in Karnataka, after the IITs, to offer this accelerated degree option.
