Sat Nov 16 11:35:59 IST 2024: ## East Coast Railway to Install Indigenous Kavach Train Collision Avoidance System

**Bhubaneswar, November 16, 2024** – The East Coast Railway (ECoR) will install the indigenously developed Kavach train collision avoidance system along a crucial 595 km stretch of the Howrah-Chennai main line, between Ranital (Bhadrak), Odisha and Duvvada (Visakhapatnam), Andhra Pradesh. A tender worth approximately ₹280 crore has been issued for the survey, design, installation, testing, and commissioning of the system.

Kavach, an automatic train protection (ATP) system, prevents collisions by automatically regulating train speed and braking, thus minimizing human error. The project will involve installing equipment on tracks, level crossings, and stations, with separate system towers to be erected later. Once operational, Kavach will enable real-time communication between trains, stations, and control centers.

This initiative, prioritized by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, aims to enhance safety on busy rail corridors. Detailed estimations are underway for Kavach’s installation on remaining ECoR sections. The railway is also focusing on modern signaling and interlocking systems to further reduce human error. The successful implementation of Kavach on this vital section will significantly reduce the risk of accidents and set a new benchmark for railway safety in India.
