Sat Nov 16 07:37:00 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lanka’s NPP Secures Landslide Victory in Parliamentary Elections

**Colombo, Sri Lanka –** President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s National People’s Power (NPP) achieved a historic victory in Sri Lanka’s parliamentary elections, securing a two-thirds majority and shattering previous voting records. The NPP won a stunning 61.56% of the vote, surpassing the previous high of 60.33% set by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s party in 2010.

The party’s dominance was widespread, winning 159 of the 225 parliamentary seats – significantly more than Rajapaksa’s 145 in 2020. They also captured 152 out of 168 polling divisions and 21 out of 22 districts, both exceeding previous records. Notably, the NPP also secured a victory in the Jaffna electoral district, a stronghold of the Tamil minority.

NPP senior spokesperson Tilvin Silva announced that President Dissanayake will appoint a new Cabinet of 23-25 ministers on Monday, November 18th. While the constitution allows for up to 30 Cabinet Ministers and 40 Deputy Ministers, the NPP intends to keep the government smaller to reduce costs, a key campaign promise. The party has previously governed with only three ministers since winning the Presidential election in September.

This election marks a significant shift in Sri Lankan politics, with the NPP becoming the first party to ever cross the 150-seat mark, guaranteeing a two-thirds majority and considerable legislative power.
