Sat Nov 16 03:04:38 UTC 2024: ## New Zealand Bowling Legend Tim Southee to Retire from Test Cricket

**Hamilton, New Zealand –** New Zealand cricket icon Tim Southee has announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing an end to an illustrious 18-year international career. The 35-year-old pacer will play his final Test match against England at his home ground, Seddon Park in Hamilton, this December.

Southee, New Zealand’s second-highest Test wicket-taker with 385 scalps in 104 matches, is the only bowler worldwide to have taken over 300 Test, 200 ODI, and 100 T20I wickets. He leaves the game having achieved legendary status, playing a pivotal role in numerous historic victories for the Black Caps, including their recent 3-0 series win over India.

While retiring from the Test arena, Southee has left the door open to potentially playing in the ICC World Test Championship final next year, should New Zealand qualify. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) CEO Scott Weenink lauded Southee as a “giant of the modern New Zealand game,” praising his consistent contribution and describing him as one of the nation’s all-time greats.

Southee’s impact extends beyond statistics. His match-winning performance in the inaugural World Test Championship final in 2021 was instrumental in New Zealand’s victory. Coach Gary Stead highlighted Southee’s “durability and resilience,” emphasizing his unwavering commitment to the team.

The upcoming series against England will serve as a fitting farewell, coinciding with a crucial period in New Zealand’s World Test Championship campaign. The series will also mark the return of former captain Kane Williamson and the debut of two promising young players, Jacob Duffy and Nathan Smith. Selector Sam Wells noted the increased significance of the series due to both the WTC implications and Southee’s retirement. The farewell to this cricketing legend is expected to generate significant excitement for the series.
