**New Delhi, November 16, 2024** – Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw today identified four key challenges facing the Indian media landscape, speaking at the Press Council of India’s National Press Day event. He emphasized the urgent need to address these issues to protect both the media and the democratic process.
The first challenge, according to Vaishnaw, is the inadequate compensation provided by online platforms for content created by traditional media outlets. He argued that the significant investment in journalism – including journalist training, editorial processes, and fact-checking – is not adequately reflected in the current unequal bargaining power between traditional media and digital platforms.
The second challenge is the proliferation of fake news and disinformation. Vaishnaw highlighted the threat this poses not only to the media’s credibility but also to the functioning of democracy itself, emphasizing the need for greater accountability from digital platforms in verifying content. He cited instances of riots and terrorism fueled by misinformation spread online.
Algorithmic bias on digital platforms formed the third challenge. Vaishnaw explained that algorithms designed to maximize engagement often prioritize sensational content regardless of factual accuracy, potentially leading to serious social consequences. He called on platforms to develop solutions that mitigate the negative impact of these algorithms on Indian society.
Finally, Vaishnaw raised concerns about the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on intellectual property rights. He questioned the protection afforded to creators, musicians, filmmakers, and authors whose content is used by AI models without adequate compensation or acknowledgment.
Minister of State for I&B L. Murugan echoed Vaishnaw’s concerns about fake news, stressing the need for greater responsibility and regulation in the digital age. PCI Chairman Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai also spoke, outlining the Council’s efforts to uphold journalistic integrity and public interest. The event also saw participation from I&B Secretary Sanjay Jaju, who highlighted government initiatives supporting journalists. In addition, Vaishnaw announced that the NDA government has designated June 25th as “Constitution Murder Day,” commemorating the imposition of the Emergency.
