Sat Nov 16 13:06:17 UTC 2024: ## Erode Hit by Heavy Rainfall, Exposing Drainage Issues

**ERODE, November 16, 2024** – Heavy rain pounded parts of Erode district on Saturday, causing significant waterlogging and disrupting traffic. The downpour, lasting nearly an hour in the afternoon, led to water stagnation across several key areas including Moolapalayam, Karungalpalayam, the Railway Station area, Veerappanchatiram, and along Karur and Cauvery Roads. Two railway underpasses in K.K. Nagar and Vendipalayam were particularly affected, forcing motorists to navigate through deep water. Many houses in low-lying areas, such as Sampath Nagar and Mariamman Kovil Street in Veerappanchatiram, were also inundated.

The flooding highlighted the city’s inadequate stormwater drainage system, prompting residents and motorists to call for urgent improvements to the long-standing problem. While the city center experienced heavy rain, the outskirts received moderate rainfall throughout the afternoon and evening.

In the 24 hours leading up to 8 a.m. Saturday, the district recorded a total rainfall of 167.80 mm. Erode city itself received 44.30 mm, while Sathyamangalam and Bhavani recorded 25 mm and 19 mm respectively.
