**Cairo, November 15, 2024** – Amnesty International has released a report revealing the presence of United Arab Emirates (UAE)-manufactured armored personnel carriers (APCs) in Sudan, used by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the ongoing civil war. The report, published Thursday, alleges a violation of the UN arms embargo imposed on Sudan.
The APCs, identified as Nimr Ajban vehicles equipped with French-made Galix reactive defense systems, have been found in various regions, including Darfur. Amnesty International claims to have verified images shared on social media showing the vehicles captured or destroyed by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
The discovery raises serious concerns about the UAE’s alleged role in supplying the RSF with weapons, prolonging the 18-month conflict that has claimed over 20,000 lives and displaced 11.6 million people, according to UN figures. The UAE vehemently denies these accusations, calling them part of a disinformation campaign. However, last month, the US sanctioned an RSF leader with ties to a UAE-based company allegedly involved in importing and modifying vehicles for the paramilitary group.
Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Agnès Callamard, stated that the use of the French-made Galix system by the RSF constitutes a clear breach of the UN arms embargo, urging the French government to halt further supplies to the UAE. Lacroix Defense, the French manufacturer, has been contacted for comment.
The Emirati government maintains its commitment to humanitarian efforts in Sudan and asserts that it has informed the UN Security Council and international partners of its non-involvement in supplying weapons to either side of the conflict. The situation remains tense, with accusations and denials flying between the involved parties, highlighting the complex and controversial nature of arms flows in the Sudanese conflict.
