Sat Nov 09 17:30:00 UTC 2024: ## “Chinese Pompeii” Theory Debunked: Mundane Events, Not Volcanoes, Preserved Yixian Formation Fossils

**Beijing, November 9, 2024** – A new study challenges the long-held belief that the exceptionally well-preserved fossils of the Yixian Formation in China, often called the “Chinese Pompeii,” were created by volcanic eruptions. For decades, the remarkably intact remains of dinosaurs, birds, mammals, and other creatures, complete with internal organs and soft tissues, were attributed to rapid burial by volcanic ash, similar to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

However, researchers using advanced dating techniques have concluded that the fossils were preserved over a significantly shorter period – less than 93,000 years – and that no major volcanic event occurred during that time. Instead, the study suggests the fossils were preserved through more commonplace events such as burrow collapses and sediment build-up during rainy seasons. These events created oxygen-free pockets that facilitated the remarkable preservation of the organisms. The findings overturn the popular “volcanic burial” hypothesis and provide a new understanding of the exceptional fossil record of the Yixian Formation.
