JHANS1, Uttar Pradesh – A devastating fire at the Maharani Laxmibai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, claimed the lives of 10 children late Friday night. The blaze, believed to have originated from a short circuit in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), rapidly engulfed the ward, trapping the infants.

While 37 children were successfully rescued by doctors and staff who broke windows to evacuate the smoke-filled ward, 10 perished in the flames. A total of 54 children were in the NICU at the time of the incident. Seven of the deceased have been identified. The death toll may rise, according to officials.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and devastation as parents and relatives frantically searched for their children. Heartbreaking images emerged showing charred medical equipment and grieving family members mourning their losses. One distraught mother was quoted as saying, “My baby has burnt to death.”

Six fire engines responded to the scene, but the rapid spread of the fire hampered rescue efforts. A committee has been formed to investigate the cause of the fire.
