Sat Nov 16 14:33:27 UTC 2024: **₹14.88 Crore Allotted for Repairs to Damaged Kanniyakumari-Kaliyakkavilai Highway**
KANNIYAKUMARI, November 16, 2024 – The dilapidated condition of a 12.23 km stretch of the Kanniyakumari-Kaliyakkavilai National Highway (NH-47) will finally see improvement, thanks to a ₹14.88 crore allocation. Kanniyakumari District Collector R. Alagumaeena announced that patchworks will be undertaken to repair the severely damaged road, which runs through several towns including Kulithurai, Marthandam, and Thuckalay.
The funds, sanctioned by the Indian National Highways Authority, will address the numerous potholes caused by heavy rainfall. The Tamil Nadu government also issued an order on November 11th, 2024, transferring responsibility for the maintenance of this section of NH-47 to the State Highways Department. A tender for the renovation is currently under evaluation. The work will involve wet mix macadam (WMM) to improve road conditions.
While welcoming the news, Kulithurai Municipality’s 20th ward councilor, M. Sardar Shah, expressed concerns that previous patchworks have proven ineffective. He highlighted the particularly poor condition of the road section from Pammam to Vettumani, citing damage caused by heavy vehicles utilizing the road due to a nearby bridge’s poor condition. He emphasized that a complete restoration, rather than just patching, is needed for a lasting solution.
