NEW DELHI – Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy has reiterated his belief in the importance of long working hours, rejecting the concept of work-life balance. Speaking at the CNBC TV18 Global Leadership Summit, Murthy reaffirmed his previous stance advocating for a 70-hour work week. He expressed his disapproval of the IT industry’s shift from six-day to five-day work weeks.

Murthy referenced a conversation with KV Kamath, chairman of Jio Financial Services, 25 years ago, stating that given India’s past economic status, prioritizing work over work-life balance was necessary. He cited Prime Minister Modi’s work ethic as an example, suggesting that the Prime Minister and his cabinet likely work over 100 hours a week, and that dedication to work is the best way to express gratitude for the opportunities afforded by the country’s progress.

Murthy also revealed his discontent with the reduction of the work week to five days in 1986, maintaining that hard work is essential for success, regardless of intelligence.
