Fri Nov 15 11:39:30 UTC 2024: ## Infosys Co-founder Narayana Murthy Defends 70-Hour Workweek, Calls for Hard Work and Dedication
**New Delhi:** Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy has reignited the debate on work-life balance by reiterating his support for a 70-hour workweek, claiming that hard work is the key to India’s development.
Speaking at the CNBC-TV18 Global Leadership Summit, Murthy dismissed the idea of work-life balance, arguing that “there is no alternative to hard work” in India. He cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reported 100-hour workweek as an example, calling for similar dedication from the nation.
“When PM Modi is working that hard, we should match that commitment,” Murthy said, emphasizing that India’s growth requires sacrifice and not relaxation.
Murthy reflected on his own career, revealing that he routinely worked 14-hour days, six and a half days a week, starting at 6:30 am and ending at 8:40 pm. He expressed pride in his commitment, stating that hard work is ingrained in Indian culture and a responsibility for those who have benefited from subsidised education.
Murthy’s earlier comments suggesting a 70-hour workweek sparked widespread social media debate, with many expressing concerns about work-life balance and employee mental health. However, Murthy remains steadfast in his belief, stating that he will “take this opinion to the grave.”
