Fri Nov 15 16:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Washoe County Schools Explore Cell Phone Restrictions: Survey Reveals Divided Opinions
**RENO, NV** – The Washoe County School District is considering a pilot program to restrict cell phone use in schools, beginning in January 2024. The decision comes after a recent survey revealed a mixed bag of opinions from parents, teachers, and students.
While a majority of families (59%) highlighted the importance of being able to contact their children during school hours, a staggering 97% of teachers and 69% of families expressed concern that cell phones negatively impact student behavior.
The survey also found that 95% of teachers and 79% of families believe cell phones are a major distraction in classrooms. Students themselves are also divided, with 43% favoring teacher discretion on cell phone use, 30% supporting keeping phones in backpacks or pockets, and 25% supporting designated storage bins or pouches.
The district will use the survey feedback to develop and refine the pilot program, which will be reviewed and updated in April 2024. The program aims to address concerns about cell phone distractions and potential negative impacts on student learning while also acknowledging the need for communication and safety.
