Fri Nov 15 15:40:00 UTC 2024: ## Hyderabad’s Tilak Varma Blasts Unbeaten Century in South Africa, Dedicates it to Captain Suryakumar Yadav
**Centurion:** In a remarkable display of power and temperament, young Hyderabad batsman Tilak Varma smashed an unbeaten century in the third T20I against South Africa, dedicating the feat to his captain Suryakumar Yadav.
Varma’s century, his first at the international level, came after he requested to bat at the crucial number three spot. Suryakumar, known for his own batting prowess, readily agreed, relinquishing his position to back the young talent.
“Tilak came to my room in Gabba and asked for the chance to bat at number three. He said he could make a difference,” revealed Suryakumar.
Varma echoed the captain’s sentiments, expressing gratitude for the opportunity and showcasing the team’s spirit of unity.
“That [blowing kisses to the dugout] was for Sky [Suryakumar Yadav] because he gave me the chance to bat at number three. I love batting at that position. I had batted at number four in the previous two matches. Suryakumar came to my room the night before the match and told me to bat at three saying it was a good opportunity for me. I told him, ‘You’ve given me a chance, and I’ll show you what I can do.’ The team has been very supportive even when we’ve failed. The management told us to keep playing in the same way. To play freely, even if we lose wickets,” stated Varma.
The 22-year-old, who made his international debut last year, battled injuries in recent months, which hampered his progress. “I had a finger dislocation in the last IPL match, which kept me out for two months. Then I got another injury while batting in the nets. I was disappointed to miss the Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka series, as I felt there were good opportunities. But I stayed patient, focused on the process, and worked hard. The captain and the management have been very supportive, and I’m glad to be back. I’m also working on improving my spin bowling,” said Varma.
