**Mumbai:** Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy has once again sparked controversy with his staunch advocacy for a 70-hour workweek. Despite the recent uproar over his remarks, Murthy has doubled down on his stance, asserting that dedication to hard work is crucial for India’s progress.
“I will not change my mind,” Murthy said during a recent CNBC Leadership Summit. “I will take this to my grave.” He expressed his disappointment over India’s shift from a six-day to a five-day workweek in 1986, claiming that it was a step in the wrong direction. “We need sacrifice, not leisure, if we want our nation to grow,” he emphasized.
Murthy cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reportedly 100-hour workweek as an example, arguing that it should inspire Indians to work harder. He also pointed to countries like Germany and Japan, known for their dedication to hard work and economic success.
Murthy further recalled working 14 hours a day during his early career, arriving at the office at 6:30 AM and leaving only at 8:40 PM. He believes that talent alone is insufficient without dedicated effort, and that the nation’s progress hinges on a rigorous work ethic.
He also suggested that Prime Minister Modi consider introducing a new civil services exam to recruit more capable management personnel, believing that this would further boost the country’s growth trajectory.
