Kanpur, India – A beloved tiger named Prashant, a long-time resident of the Kanpur Zoo, passed away on Wednesday, November 13, at the age of 19. Prashant, who had lived at the zoo for 11 years, was known for his majestic presence and playful nature. Zoo staff and visitors alike mourned his loss, remembering him fondly as a member of the zoo family.
Prashant’s journey began in 2010 when he was rescued from the Farrukhabad district at the age of five. He had a fearsome reputation, having reportedly killed nine people, but he quickly settled into zoo life. In 2010, he was paired with Tigress Trusha, and the couple produced seven cubs, several of which went on to find homes in zoos across India.
One of Prashant’s cubs, Badshah, gained national attention when he was photographed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the inauguration of Asia’s largest jungle safari in New Raipur, Chhattisgarh.
The zoo’s veterinary team provided extensive care for Prashant in his final days, but despite their efforts, he succumbed to age-related ailments. A post-mortem confirmed the cause of death, and viscera samples have been sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly for further analysis.
Prashant’s legacy lives on through his offspring. Several of his cubs, including Akbar, Amar, Ambika, and Anthony, continue to reside at the Kanpur Zoo, carrying forward their father’s legacy. His death marks the end of an era for the Kanpur Zoo, but his memory will continue to be cherished by all who knew him.
