Fri Nov 15 12:05:11 UTC 2024: ## Six Youths Killed in Dehradun Accident After Night Out
Dehradun, November 15, 2024: A night of fun and revelry turned into tragedy for six young adults in Dehradun after their speeding car collided with a container truck, leaving them dead. The accident, which occurred at the ONGC intersection at around 2 am, claimed the lives of Gunnit Singh, Kamakshi Singhal, Navya Goyal, Rishabh Jain, Atul Agrawal, and Kunal Kukreja. All except Kunal, a resident of Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, were from Dehradun.
The only survivor, Siddhesh Agrawal, remains hospitalized in stable condition but is unable to recall the details of the accident.
Initial investigations reveal that the MUV, which was reportedly new and without license plates, was traveling at a high speed towards Garhi Cantt from Ballupur Chowk. Witnesses claim that a luxury car had overtaken the MUV, prompting the MUV driver to accelerate, likely in a reckless attempt to race. The MUV subsequently collided with the container truck, which was crossing the intersection at a steady speed.
The impact of the crash was so severe that the MUV’s roof was ripped off, killing two passengers instantly. The vehicle was completely destroyed, making it impossible to identify it.
Police are investigating the possibility that the MUV driver was under the influence of alcohol, as videos surfaced online showing the group partying and consuming alcohol prior to the accident.
The truck driver fled the scene after the accident, leaving behind a trail of devastation. The vehicle was later found abandoned. The Cantt Police Station Inspector, K.C. Bhatt, who is investigating the case, stated that initial findings suggest the truck driver was not at fault. The MUV crashed into the left rear of the truck while traveling at high speed, a blind spot for truck drivers.
While the MUV driver’s death makes it impossible to file charges, police are exploring legal options.
CCTV footage shows the MUV initially traveling at a normal speed, but accelerating rapidly just before the accident. The truck, which was travelling at a speed of 1.5 kilometers in six minutes, was hit from behind by the MUV.
The incident has raised concerns about reckless driving and lack of enforcement in the city. A nearby restaurant owner reported a near-miss with the MUV around 1 am, when the car was speeding in the wrong direction. He alerted the police but no action was taken. He later reported the incident to the emergency helpline and emailed authorities, including the SSP and Chief Minister’s office, only to learn about the fatal accident the next morning.
The incident is a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless driving and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.
