**Baku, Azerbaijan (November 14, 2024) –** In a major step towards a sustainable and equitable energy future, the G20 has endorsed a new “Just and Inclusive Energy Transition Compact” at the COP29 climate summit in Baku.
The Compact, spearheaded by the Brazilian G20 Presidency and supported by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), codifies ten voluntary principles aimed at promoting a clean, affordable, and inclusive energy transition.
This initiative builds on the G20 Energy Ministers’ endorsement of these principles in October 2024. The Compact now invites member states, non-state actors, and other stakeholders to join as signatories, committing to fostering a just and inclusive energy transition.
“This pact for fair and inclusive transitions is our contribution to the world joining the cause,” declared Alexandre Silveira, Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy. He emphasized Brazil’s commitment to sharing its expertise and technology to combat energy poverty.
Amina Mohammad, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, lauded the initiative, highlighting its recognition that access to clean energy is crucial for human well-being, livelihoods, and prosperity.
“The call is for all of us – governments, industry, financiers and the private sector – to transform ideas to innovation and commitment to action in people’s lives,” she said in a video message.
The Compact’s launch event in Baku saw prominent speakers, including representatives from the Brazilian government, international organizations, private sector, and development finance institutions, emphasizing its broad-based and multi-stakeholder approach.
Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All, stated, “This Energy Compact is a testament to our collective commitment to a transition that benefits everyone—especially the most vulnerable among us.”
The Just and Inclusive Energy Transition Compact joins a growing movement of similar initiatives, aiming to build an inclusive coalition, empower a fair transition, and advance shared principles such as Gender and Energy, 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy, and No New Coal.
