**Dhaka, Bangladesh:** A planned rally by the Awami League, the party ousted from power in August, was violently disrupted on Sunday by members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and other political groups. The students, who played a key role in toppling Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government, chased and assaulted at least seven individuals believed to be Awami League activists.
The incident took place at Noor Hossain Chattar, or Zero Point, near the Awami League’s central office. The rally was intended to be the party’s first public demonstration since its removal from power.
The interim government, led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, had previously announced it would not permit the rally, citing concerns about public safety and law and order. Chief Advisor Yunus’ press secretary, Shafiqul Alam, warned of strong action against anyone attempting to hold gatherings or processions at the behest of the Awami League.
Television footage showed members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement chanting slogans against “fascist Hasina” and demanding her trial for alleged mass killings. The counter-protest caused significant traffic disruptions in the area.
Police were present at the scene and attempted to calm the situation, detaining some alleged Awami League supporters.
Noor Hossain Chattar holds historical significance as the site where Awami League youth leader Noor Hossain was killed in 1987 during a demonstration against the military dictatorship of General H.M. Ershad.
This latest incident highlights the ongoing political tension in Bangladesh, with the interim government cracking down on any perceived threat to its authority.
