Mysuru, India – Sharath Jois, renowned Ashtanga yoga teacher and grandson of the legendary Krishna Pattabhi Jois, the founder of Ashtanga yoga, has passed away at the age of 53. Jois’ passing has been met with deep sorrow by the global yoga community, who recognize his pivotal role in carrying forward the legacy of Ashtanga.

Born in Mysuru in 1971, Jois initially pursued a career in electronics before finding his true calling in yoga. At the age of 19, he began studying under his grandfather, immersing himself in the practice and deepening his understanding of Ashtanga yoga’s spiritual and physical dimensions.

Jois went on to teach students from around the world, establishing the Sharath Yoga Center in Hebbal, Mysuru, which became a hub for dedicated practitioners seeking to learn directly from the master. His teaching extended beyond India, with numerous students traveling to his center for intensive training. He also mentored several high-profile figures, including pop icon Madonna and actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

While the exact cause of death has not been confirmed, reports suggest Jois suffered a heart attack while hiking near the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. His sister, Sharmila Mahesh, confirmed his passing through an Instagram post.

Shivaprakash Guruji, Working President of the Federation of Yoga and President of Paramahamsa Yoga Mahavidyalaya in Mysuru, called Jois’ passing an “irreparable loss” to the yoga community. Dr. Murthy, a prominent figure in the yoga world, praised Jois for his dedication to preserving and promoting the legacy of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga.
