Tue Nov 12 23:09:20 UTC 2024: ## Air National Guard Member Sentenced to 15 Years for Leaking Classified Documents
**Boston, MA** – Jack Teixeira, a 22-year-old member of the Massachusetts National Guard, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Tuesday for leaking classified documents about the war in Ukraine and other military secrets.
Teixeira pleaded guilty earlier this year to six counts of wilful retention and transmission of national defence information under the Espionage Act. Prosecutors had sought a 17-year sentence, calling his actions “one of the most significant and consequential violations of the Espionage Act in American history.”
The leaked documents included sensitive information about allies and adversaries, including troop movements in Ukraine and top secret information about Israel’s Mossad spy agency. Teixeira also admitted to posting information about a US adversary’s plans to harm American forces overseas.
Teixeira, who worked as a cyber-transport systems specialist at Otis Air National Guard Base, shared the classified documents on the messaging app Discord. He initially typed out copies and later photographed the files, some bearing “SECRET” and “TOP SECRET” markings.
The breach raised serious concerns about the US’s ability to protect its secrets and caused embarrassment for the Biden administration, which scrambled to contain the diplomatic and military fallout.
Teixeira’s lawyers argued for a lighter sentence of 11 years, claiming their client had no political motives and was not working as a spy for a foreign government. They suggested his actions stemmed from a desire to educate his friends about world events.
Despite the defense’s argument, the judge sentenced Teixeira to 15 years, acknowledging the severity of his actions. Teixeira apologized to the court, expressing remorse for the “maelstrom” his actions caused.
Under the terms of his guilty plea, Teixeira cannot be charged with any further Espionage Act violations.
