Tue Nov 12 15:44:15 UTC 2024: ## Ramgoolam Returns to Power in Mauritius Landslide Victory
**PORT LOUIS, Mauritius** – Former Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam has secured a resounding victory in Mauritius’ parliamentary elections, reclaiming the top spot after a six-year hiatus. The Alliance of Change (ADC) coalition, led by Ramgoolam, won 62.6% of the vote, capturing 60 out of 62 seats in the National Assembly.
Ramgoolam, who served as prime minister from 1995 to 2000 and again from 2005 to 2014, attributed the victory to the people’s desire for change. “The court of the people has delivered its verdict and a new Mauritius awakes,” the 77-year-old leader declared to cheering supporters.
Incumbent Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth conceded defeat on Monday, acknowledging the “huge defeat” of his Lepep alliance. Jugnauth, who has held office since 2017, attributed the loss to the public’s desire for a “new team” to lead the nation.
The election, overshadowed by an explosive wire-tapping scandal, saw both sides campaign on promises to address the rising cost of living. Ramgoolam, however, pledged to prioritize dismantling the country’s “spying system” to ensure freedom of speech.
The ADC manifesto outlines plans for a hardship support fund, free public transport, increased pensions, reduced fuel prices, and initiatives to tackle corruption and promote a green economy. It also proposes constitutional and electoral reforms.
Mauritius, known as one of Africa’s most stable democracies, has achieved economic success since gaining independence in 1968. The country’s economy is driven by its finance, tourism, and agricultural sectors.
Both Jugnauth and Ramgoolam hail from prominent families that have dominated Mauritian politics since independence. Ramgoolam, a former doctor and lawyer, is the son of Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, who led the nation to independence from Britain.
