Renowned Bengali actor, playwright, and director Manoj Mitra passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 86. He was known for his contributions to both theater and cinema. Mitra is best remembered for his role in the Tapan Sinha film “Bancharamer Bagan,” which was based on his play “Sajano Bagan.”
He also starred in iconic films by Satyajit Ray, including “Ghare Baire” and “Ganashatru.” Mitra was known for his comedic and villainous roles, appearing in numerous films by prominent directors like Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Basu Chatterjee, Tarun Mazumdar, Shakti Samanta, and Gautam Ghosh.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences, calling Mitra a “leading personality in our theatre and film worlds” and praising his “immense contributions.”
