Wed Nov 13 10:03:05 UTC 2024: ## Doctor Critically Injured After Stabbing Attack at Chennai Hospital
**Chennai, India** – A senior oncologist, Dr. Balaji, was critically injured on Wednesday after being stabbed multiple times by a young man at the Kalaignar Centenary Hospital in Chennai. The attack, which occurred around 10:30 a.m., left Dr. Balaji with severe wounds to his neck, head, and upper chest. He was immediately admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and remains in critical condition.
Eyewitnesses reported that hospital staff quickly intervened, apprehended the assailant, and handed him over to the police. The attacker, identified as 25-year-old Vigneshwaran from Perungalathur, was taken into custody. While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, a hospital staff member, speaking anonymously to IANS, suggested that Vigneshwaran may have been dissatisfied with the treatment provided to his mother at the hospital. Police have stated that further information will be available after a detailed interrogation of the accused.
The attack has sparked widespread concern and anger within the medical community, with doctors’ unions in Tamil Nadu reportedly planning a flash strike in response. This incident comes just months after the shocking rape and murder of a woman doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata in August, which sparked nationwide protests and calls for increased security for healthcare professionals.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident and working to determine the exact circumstances leading to the attack.
