**Kolkata, November 12:** Prominent Bengali theatre and film actor, director, and playwright ‘Bangabibhushan’ Manoj Mitra passed away on Tuesday morning. The 85-year-old Mitra left an indelible mark on Bengali performing arts through his acting and writing. He was known for his iconic plays “Bancharamer Bagan” and “Shajahan”, which garnered him immense popularity.

Mitra, born in 1938 in the Satkhira district of East Bengal, graduated from Scottish Church College in 1958. His contributions spanned various mediums, from stage plays to films like Satyajit Ray’s “Ghare Baire.” He also struggled with age-related health issues, including heart and blood pressure problems, for a long time.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences through a tweet, stating that Mitra’s contributions to Bengali theatre and cinema were invaluable. She added that his death has created a void in the art world.

Mitra breathed his last at a Kolkata hospital at 8:50 am.
