The veteran actor, known for his distinguished career in theater and film, passed away early morning due to respiratory distress and an electrolyte imbalance. He had been admitted to the hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties and was unable to recover.
Mitra began his career in 1957 with the Kolkata theater scene, quickly establishing himself as a prominent figure. He made his foray into films in 1979 with the film “Bunchramer Bagan” directed by Tapan Sinha, which garnered him critical acclaim. He went on to feature in several other successful films, including Satyajit Ray’s classic “Ghare Baire” and “Ganashatru,” cementing his place in Bengali cinema.
Beyond his acting career, Mitra was also a prolific playwright, having penned over 100 plays. His contribution to the arts earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious award for Best Playwright in 1985.
